What is it

A brain tumor is a growth of cells in the brain that does not function normally. There are many different types of brain tumors. Some grow from brain cells themselves (primary tumors), while others are cancer that has spread from elsewhere in the body (secondary tumors).

**Detection**: many tumors are discovered because someone experiences symptoms (headaches, loss of function, seizures). Others are found by chance on a brain scan performed for another reason.

**Growth**: some brain tumors grow very slowly and do not change much for years. Others grow faster. Growth depends on the cell type and how the tumor cells behave.

**Pressure on brain tissue**: as a tumor grows larger, it can put pressure on healthy brain tissue. This can disrupt functions controlled by that area of the brain. Fluid buildup can also occur, which increases the pressure further.

**Treatment**: most brain tumors are treated with a combination of:
- Surgery (removing as much of the tumor as possible)
- Radiotherapy (radiation from outside, targeted at the tumor)

- Loss of movement or sensation on one side of the body
- Speech or language difficulties
- Concentration and memory problems
- Changes in personality or behavior
- Epileptic seizures
- Balance disorders, dizziness

Which symptoms occur depends on where the tumor is located. A tumor in the cerebellum (back of head) mainly causes balance problems; a tumor near the motor center mainly causes motor symptoms.

**After treatment**
- Symptoms may decrease as the tumor shrinks
- Side effects of treatment may occur (fatigue, cognitive problems, hair loss, concentration difficulties)
- If the tumor returns, symptoms may reappear

Living with a brain tumor changes things in many ways.

**Medical**: frequent hospital visits (examinations, imaging, treatment). Medical decisions must be made quickly. Side effects of treatment can last for months.

**Work and study**: concentration problems, fatigue and appointments can make working or studying difficult. Some people can continue working fully, others must reduce work or stop entirely.

**Family and relationships**: fear and uncertainty can affect relationships. Partners and loved ones are often very involved in care and decisions. Children may need extra attention and guidance.

**Autonomy**: depending on the location of the tumor and treatment, motor, speech or cognitive functions may be affected. This can limit independence.

**Driving**: many brain tumors and their treatments affect reaction time or concentration. Many countries have rules about when you can drive again after treatment.

**Mental health**: being diagnosed with a brain tumor is very stressful. Many people experience fear about the future, depression, and feelings of loss. Psychological support is important.

**Supportive care**: physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy or neuropsychological help may be needed to retrain functions.

The outlook for brain tumors is very diverse and depends on multiple factors:
