# Alternative treatments for facioscapulohumeral dystrophy

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese treatment method in which thin needles are placed at specific points in the skin. In FSHD, it is sometimes used with the aim of relieving muscle pain and improving muscle function.

Nevertheless, it is important to know that specialist neuromuscular physiotherapy can make a major difference in how long you remain functional and how you cope with fatigue and pain.

Physiotherapists experienced with muscular dystrophies can adapt exercises to your current strength and help you prevent secondary problems such as stiffness or cramping. This is part of regular medical care, not alternative medicine.

Nutritional supplements and vitamins

Many patients with muscular dystrophies consider using vitamins, CoQ10, creatine or other dietary supplements in the hope of improving muscle function or slowing decline.

In FSHD specifically, this topic has not been well researched. Although some supplements are cautiously studied in other muscular dystrophies, targeted studies in FSHD are very scarce. Additionally, excessive use of certain supplements can be unfavorable or interact with medication.

Magnetic therapy

Some patients believe that intensive training can restore muscle strength, but in FSHD, excessive intense exertion can actually lead to further muscle wasting, pain and fatigue.
