# Alternative Treatment Methods for Parkinson's
Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine
Acupuncture and herbal therapies from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) are used in various countries for symptom management in Parkinson's, particularly for complaints such as rigidity, stiffness and constipation. Recent studies are examining effects on intestinal function and possibly also on inflammatory processes in the brain.

There are ongoing clinical trials into acupuncture for constipation in Parkinson's. The results are not yet definitively available. For other symptoms such as tremor or stiffness there are smaller studies, but the evidence is limited and not strong enough to make concrete statements. TCM herbs contain plant substances that act in the laboratory on proteins that play a role in Parkinson's (for example mitophagy and anti-inflammatory agents), but this does not automatically mean they have the same effect in the body of a patient. Much research is taking place in China and is still ongoing.
Tai Chi
Tai Chi is a form of movement in which careful, fluid movements are performed at a slow pace. People with Parkinson's sometimes use it because it trains balance, coordination and flexibility.

Multiple studies have been conducted into Tai Chi in elderly people with various conditions. In Parkinson's in particular, the studies are small and the results are mixed. Tai Chi appears to be safe and some participants report improvement in balance and gait pattern, but it is unclear whether the benefits are greater than those of other exercise programs. More research is needed. It can certainly be part of an exercise therapy program, but is not a replacement for regular physiotherapy or medication.
Tailored Training Programs and Physical Therapy
Physiotherapy and structured training (such as dance therapy, walking or strength training) are widely supported in Parkinson's care. Research into the optimal types of exercise and intensity is ongoing.

Regular, tailored movement and physiotherapy have been shown to help with many Parkinson's symptoms: tremor decreases slightly, stiffness reduces, balance improves and depression lessens. This is not 'alternative', but is part of standard care. The challenge is to figure out which exercises work best for which person at which times. Research compares different training methods to provide the best possible guidelines.
Telerehabilitation (online physical therapy)
Due to the coronavirus pandemic and other circumstances, more and more therapies are being offered online. Research is looking at whether patients find this applicable and enjoyable.
ResearchediPositive results in clinical studies, not yet standard treatment
Telerehabilitation via video chat or app can lower the threshold for physical therapy, especially for people who have difficulty traveling to a clinic. Early studies show that patients appreciate this and that it fits better with their lives. Whether it is as effective as face-to-face therapy is not yet entirely clear. This is a tool, not a replacement for professional guidance.
Supplements and Plant Substances
Research is being conducted into various plant substances (catalpol, herbal bioactives, oridonin) that protect brain cells from damage or inflammation in the laboratory. Vitamins and other supplements are also being studied.

These substances are still in the research stage in cells and animal models. They have not yet been tested in large human studies. They are also not yet available as medication. It is tempting to buy so-called 'natural' supplements containing these substances via the internet, but: the concentration is unknown, purity is not guaranteed, and they may interact with regular Parkinson's medication. Wait for the results of clinical trials before investing in this.
Diet and Nutrition
Some suggest that diet influences the disease, through the gut flora or inflammation.

The relationship between gut flora, diet, and Parkinson's symptoms is being investigated, and these connections are biologically plausible. However, there is still no strong evidence that a specific diet halts or substantially slows Parkinson's symptoms. That said, good nutrition is generally healthy, and constipation (a common complaint in Parkinson's) responds better to adequate fiber, fluids, and movement. Eat healthy and recognizable food; exotic detox diets have no scientific evidence.
Magnetic stimulation and other physical techniques
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and similar techniques aim to influence brain activity without medication.
ExperimentaliOngoing in study setting, outcome still unknown
These techniques are being investigated, particularly for depression and motor symptoms in Parkinson's. Results remain small-scale and inconsistent so far. This is not standard treatment and is not without risk.
Homeopathy
Homeopathic preparations (highly diluted substances) are sometimes offered for Parkinson's complaints.

Homeopathy has no active ingredient after dilution and there is no biological mechanism by which it could work. Multiple studies show that homeopathy is no better than placebo. Worse: if someone starts using homeopathy *instead of* regular Parkinson's medication, the disease can deteriorate much more rapidly. Homeopathy cannot prevent or relieve any Parkinson's symptom.
Special 'Parkinson's clinics' or 'miracle cures' from private providers
Online and elsewhere, treatments are sometimes promoted with bold promises: 'cure', 'stopping the disease', or 'alternative to medication'.
Advised againstiProven ineffective or harmful, or dangerous in combination with your treatment
Parkinson's is a chronic, progressive neurodegenerative disease. There is no cure. Every serious healthcare provider will say that honestly. Providers who promise they can cure or stop Parkinson's are not basing that on valid research. They often exploit desperation and are often expensive too. The risk is high that you lose money and neglect your regular treatment, which harms your health.
