# Asbestosis
What is it
Asbestosis is a serious lung disease that occurs due to the inhalation of asbestos fibers. It is a form of occupational disease that mainly affects people who have been exposed to asbestos for years, for example in construction, shipbuilding, industry or textile production.
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that, due to its strength, flexibility and heat resistance, has been widely used in insulation materials, roofs, brakes and many other products. When materials containing asbestos are damaged or broken down, very fine fibres can be released that float in the air and are inhaled.
These fibers reach deep into the lungs and can stay there for years. They continuously stimulate lung tissue, which ultimately leads to scarring (fibrosis). This increasingly limits the elasticity and function of the lungs.
The difference between asbestosis and asbestos exposure is important: exposure alone does not automatically mean that you will become ill. The risk of asbestosis depends on:
- **Duration of exposure**: usually years of regular contact
- **The concentration**: how many fibres in the air
- **The type of asbestos**: certain forms are more harmful
- **Individual factors**: your lung capacity and hereditary traits also play a role

**Progression**: Once started, asbestosis usually worsens gradually. Lung function declines step by step. This rate varies greatly from person to person — some remain more stable for decades, others worsen more quickly.
**What happens in the lung: **
The inhaled fibres lock into the lung tissue. The body tries to get rid of them, but it doesn't work. This triggers inflammatory reactions, which cause layers of scar tissue (fibrosis). These scars make the tissue stiff and less elastic, making gas exchange more difficult.
Scarring usually starts at the base of the wound (bottom) and can spread upward.
**Additional risks**:
People with asbestosis have an increased risk of certain types of lung cancer and mesothelioma (lung cancer). This risk increases significantly if they also smoke or have smoked.
Symptoms by phase
Asbestosis does not occur in sharply defined “phases”, but you can speak of a gradual progression from no complaints to more and more restrictions.
**Early stage (no or minimal symptoms) :**
- Often no noticeable complaints
- Images may already show changes
- Lung function tests may be slightly reduced
- Many people still feel completely normal
**Intermediate stage (mild to moderate symptoms):**
- Mild shortness of breath, especially during physical exertion
- Mild cough, sometimes dry
- Possible some fatigue
- Lung function tests show clearer loss
- Images become more abnormal
**Advanced stage (severe symptoms):**
- Noticeable shortness of breath even with light activities
- Persistent cough
- Possible sputum production
- Possible chest tightness or pain
- Fatigue increases
- Physical exertion becomes increasingly difficult
- Lung function is significantly reduced
- Images show extensive scarring
**Very advanced stage:**
- Shortness of breath even at rest
- Sleep problems due to breathing restrictions
- Possible bluish lips or fingers during exertion
- Major limitation in daily functioning
- Risk of right-sided heart failure (pulmonary cor) if lungs are severely damaged
The important caveat: not everyone follows this pattern. Some remain minimally symptomatic for many years. Others develop symptoms faster. The variability is great.
What it means for daily life
Asbestos-related lung disease can significantly limit daily life, depending on severity.
**In the beginning:**
For many people, initially not much noticeable changes. You feel normal, go to work, play sports. But you are aware of the diagnosis, which can be psychologically burdensome.
**As the disease progresses:**
- **Work**: Physical jobs become harder. Climbing stairs, heavy lifting, or work in high temperatures or with much dust exposure becomes problematic. Many people can no longer work in the same role.
- **Sports and recreation**: Intense activities (running, fitness, football) gradually become less feasible. Walking, swimming or cycling may remain possible longer.
- **Housework**: Heavy cleaning, window washing, or gardening can become tiring.
- **Sleeping**: Shortness of breath can make lying down harder; some sleep better with extra pillows.
- **Social life**: This depends on your energy level and what your friends do. Much is still possible for a long time.
**Medical consequences:**
- Regular check-ups and lung function tests are needed
- Medicines to relieve symptoms (bronchodilators, sometimes corticosteroids)
- With severe disease, home oxygen therapy may be needed
- Infections (flu, pneumococcal) are more dangerous and require faster medical attention
**Psychological and social:**
Many people find it difficult to live with a chronic, progressive disease with no cure. Depression and anxiety are not uncommon. Counseling and support groups can help.

The outlook for asbestosis is mixed and very personal.

**Can asbestosis be cured?**

**I was exposed to asbestos a long time ago. Will I get asbestosis?**

**Can my partner or children get asbestosis from me?**
Asbestosis is not contagious. Your partner or children cannot "catch" it from you. However, this is rare and should not be a problem with normal hygiene.
**Do I need to take allergy medication now or change my diet?**
Allergy medications do not help specifically against asbestosis. Changing your diet will not stop the disease. However: eating well, getting enough exercise (what you can manage), quitting smoking, and infection prevention are matters of healthy living. Always consult your own doctor.
