# Alternative Treatment Methods for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
Various Chinese herbal mixtures are being investigated for possible effectiveness against non-Hodgkin lymphoma, particularly against diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), the most common form. Researchers have attempted to gain insight into how certain herbs may work, for example through effects on immune signals or growth of cancer cells in laboratory conditions. Some studies show that certain herbal substances have effects in cell tests, but this does not yet translate into proven effectiveness in patients.
ResearchediPositive results in clinical studies, not yet standard treatment
There are case reports of patients who used TCM herbal mixtures alongside chemotherapy, for example to limit side effects such as fever from neutropenia (low white blood cells). This type of report provides only limited information. It remains unknown how large the effect actually is and whether the TCM herbs may have unwanted interactions with regular chemotherapy.
Selenium as Supplementary Therapy
Selenium is an essential trace element found in some foods. A recent systematic review examined selenium in cancer patients in general. Although selenium is involved in immune mechanisms, the evidence for a supplementary effect against lymphoma growth is weak and inconsistent. For non-Hodgkin lymphoma specifically, strong studies are lacking.
ResearchediPositive results in clinical studies, not yet standard treatment
Selenium in normal dietary amounts is safe, but high doses can be toxic. It is important not to take this on your own without consulting your care provider, because selenium can interact with chemotherapy and radiation.
Quercetin
Quercetin is a natural substance found in many vegetables and fruits. Laboratory studies have shown that quercetin can influence certain signalling pathways in lymphoma cells. It has been investigated in combination with dried herbs (Qiling Baitouweng Tang) in cell tests, with potential effects on growth and death of cancer cells.
ResearchediPositive results in clinical studies, not yet standard treatment
This research is currently only taking place in the laboratory. No clinical trials in patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma have been demonstrated. Quercetin is not a replacement for regular treatment.
Toosendanin
Toosendanin is a compound from a traditional plant. In cell laboratories it has been shown to disrupt certain growth patterns in DLBCL cells. This work is still very early and taking place in test tubes, not in patients.
ExperimentaliOngoing in study setting, outcome still unknown
This is a research stage without clinical applications. It is not suitable for use by patients.
Wogonin
Wogonin is a substance from certain herbs that appears to have effects on lymphoma cells in cell laboratories, possibly in combination with venetoclax (a regular medication). This type of combination research is frequently conducted, but remains limited to laboratory work for now.
ResearchediPositive results in clinical studies, not yet standard treatment
There are no clinical trials in patients underway, and the substance is not available as a medical treatment. It is a research direction, not an option for treatment at this time.
Nanoparticles with Cytostatic Agents and Herbal Substances
A recent study describes an experimental nanoplatform that would combine doxorubicin (a chemotherapeutic agent) with herbal substances to both address lymphoma pain and limit consequences such as diarrhea. This is fundamental research at the cellular level.
ExperimentaliOngoing in study setting, outcome still unknown
This exists only in the laboratory. It is not available to patients and far removed from clinical application.
Homeopathy
Homeopathy is based on highly diluted substances. There is no scientific evidence that homeopathic remedies can treat non-Hodgkin lymphoma or reduce side effects of chemotherapy. Large studies show that homeopathy does not work better than placebo.
Advised againstiProven ineffective or harmful, or dangerous in combination with your treatment
Not because it would be harmful in itself, but because it is not an effective treatment. The risk is that a patient experiences a delay in regular treatment by spending time and money on homeopathy. This can have serious consequences.
Magnetic therapy, crystals and energy therapies
There is no scientific evidence that magnetic fields, crystals or "energy" treatments have an effect on cancer cells or lymphoma growth.
Advised againstiProven ineffective or harmful, or dangerous in combination with your treatment
These approaches have no active ingredients against non-Hodgkin lymphoma and can be expensive. Like homeopathy, there is a risk of delay in effective care.
Raw food patterns and extreme diets
Some alternative medicine sources suggest that raw food or certain diets can "cure" lymphoma. This is not true.
Advised againstiProven ineffective or harmful, or dangerous in combination with your treatment
Extreme diets during chemotherapy and radiation can cause malnutrition and exhaustion, just when your body needs strong nutrition. This can undermine treatment and make side effects worse.
Important safety notes
If you are considering alternative treatments:
- **Always tell your doctor what you use.** Many herbs can interact with chemotherapy, immunotherapy or radiation.
- **Do not buy without approval.** Online offerings of "miracle herbs" are often uncontrolled and may contain unknown mixtures.
- **Do not skip examinations.** Even when you want to try something complementary, scans and blood tests must continue to see how you are progressing.
- **Laboratory results are not the same as reality.** What works in a petri dish does not automatically work in a human.
