# Alternative Treatment Methods for Systemic Amyloidosis
Herbal Extracts and Plant Phenols
Various studies have focused on plant substances that may potentially inhibit the formation of amyloid protein aggregates. A number of studies describe how certain phenolic compounds (substances from plants) can influence incorrect protein folding in the laboratory.
ResearchediPositive results in clinical studies, not yet standard treatment
To date, this research is conducted almost exclusively in cell cultures and animals. There are no randomized clinical trials with patients with systemic amyloidosis demonstrating that plant extracts can slow or stop the disease. However, exploratory research suggests that certain plant substances have theoretical interest, but much more research is needed before it becomes clear whether this is safe and effective in humans. This applies to extracted phenols and also to traditionally used herbs such as Paeonia roots (peony root).
Important: adding uncontrolled plant preparations alongside regular medications can be risky, as interactions are not well known.
Gut Bacteria (Microbiota Modulation)
A small number of studies are investigating whether changes in gut bacteria composition can influence protein aggregation and inflammatory reactions in the body. The idea is that certain bacteria in the intestinal tract may contribute to inflammatory processes that worsen amyloid deposition.

This research is still in very early stages. There are no clinical studies in patients with systemic amyloidosis demonstrating that intentionally changing gut bacteria composition (via diet, probiotics, or other means) affects the disease. This remains an area of research with no proven value in practice.
Diet and Nutritional Modification
Some sources suggest that certain dietary patterns or absence of certain nutrients may influence the progression of amyloidosis.

There are no structured clinical studies demonstrating that specific diets (for example, without certain amino acids or with special antioxidants) can slow the progression of systemic amyloidosis. Good nutrition and weight stabilization support general wellbeing, but there is no diet that can directly stop or reverse amyloid deposition.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
This is a treatment where patients inhale 100% oxygen in a pressure chamber. The idea is sometimes that this can repair tissue damage or dampen inflammatory reactions.

There is no scientific evidence that hyperbaric oxygen works against systemic amyloidosis. Moreover, using such intensive treatments without guidance from your healthcare provider can be risky, especially because the disease process must be kept under control with regular monitoring of your organ function.
Chelation and Detoxification Methods
Commercially offered "detox" treatments, dietary supplements for "heavy metal removal" or chelation therapy are sometimes presented as a cure for amyloidosis.

These approaches are not effective against amyloidosis and can be harmful. Amyloidosis is not a poisoning disease and cannot be solved by "removing" substances from the body. Some chelation methods can even deplete vital minerals and damage your kidneys and heart — precisely the organs that are already vulnerable in amyloidosis.
Acupuncture and Traditional Medicine
Acupuncture and traditional medicine systems (TCM, Ayurveda) are offered in some countries as support.

Acupuncture has been studied in some countries for pain management and symptom control in chronic diseases, but there are no studies showing that it can inhibit amyloid deposition or slow the disease. It may potentially offer symptom relief (such as pain management for peripheral nerve involvement), but this is not treatment of the disease itself. Many traditional medicinal preparations are poorly standardized and their safety alongside regular medications is unknown.
Interference therapy (interferential current)
This is a physical therapy in which weak electrical currents are passed through tissue, sometimes offered as "regeneration therapy".

There is no evidence that electrical therapies can stop amyloid deposition or treat the disease. Physical therapy to support muscle strength and mobility can be worthwhile, but only the regular form (exercise, rehabilitation) has demonstrable benefits.
Antioxidants and nutritional supplements
Many antioxidants (vitamin C, E, CoQ10, resveratrol) are sold with the promise that they prevent cell damage.

Although antioxidants can influence certain aspects of protein misfolding in the laboratory, there are no clinical studies showing that they slow the progression of systemic amyloidosis. High doses of certain supplements can also interact with medications and strain your kidneys and liver.
Stem cell transplantation (autologous)
This is sometimes offered as an experimental approach, particularly in combination with chemotherapy.
ExperimentaliOngoing in study setting, outcome still unknown
In some centers, autologous stem cell transplantation (use of your own stem cells) is being investigated for certain forms of amyloidosis, especially AA amyloidosis. However, this occurs in strictly structured clinical trials under close supervision. It is highly intensive, risky, and only available to selected patients in specialized centers. This is not an alternative treatment, but an investigational treatment with considerable risks.
