# Alternative Treatment Approaches for Gaucher Disease
Enzyme Replacement via Plant-Based Production
Researchers are working on ways to produce the missing enzyme glucocerebrosidase (also called β-glucosidase) in plants, for example in rice. The aim is to make this enzyme more affordable and available in larger quantities than through current pharmaceutical methods.

This research is still in the laboratory stage. No clinical trials have been conducted in patients, and it is not known when or if this will become practically feasible. This differs fundamentally from enzyme replacement therapies already in use, which are produced via genetic engineering in animal cells or human cells and have been in use for decades.
Acupuncture
A small number of studies have investigated whether acupuncture can relieve symptoms of Gaucher disease, particularly pain and fatigue.

To date, large, well-conducted studies demonstrating that acupuncture is effective against the symptoms of this disease are lacking. Any studies that exist have been small in scale and without strict control groups. While acupuncture may have some effect for certain conditions, there is no evidence that it specifically helps with Gaucher disease. Importantly, acupuncture cannot replace medical treatment, because this disease is progressive and can cause serious complications without appropriate care.
Complementary Therapies in Broader Perspective
Research among patients with lysosomal storage diseases (the group to which Gaucher belongs) shows that some use nutritional supplements, herbal remedies, or other complementary approaches as an addition. This usually occurs alongside, not instead of, regular treatment.

The research shows that patients use these remedies, but not that they are effective against Gaucher disease itself. RIPK3 Inhibition (Research into a New Target)
Laboratory studies have shown that the protein RIPK3 may be involved in the harmful inflammatory processes that occur in Gaucher disease. This theoretically opens a new target for drug development.

This is fundamental research in cell cultures and animal models. There are no drugs yet tested in this manner in patients with Gaucher disease. It may take years before, and if, this leads to a clinically useful treatment.
