General nutritional status and lung function
In asbestosis, good nutritional status is important because the body continuously deals with inflammation in the lungs. Research shows that people with asbestos-related diseases may experience more malnutrition and weight loss, especially as lung function declines. Stable weight and adequate intake of energy and protein help keep the body stronger.
However, no specific nutrition plan has been shown to stop or improve asbestosis. Nutrition can contribute to overall health and resistance, which is indirectly important in chronic lung disease.
Antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances

Foods rich in antioxidants — such as leafy greens, berries, nuts and oily fish — contain substances that can influence inflammatory processes in the body. In asbestosis, where prolonged inflammation occurs in lung tissue, these nutrients are often mentioned as supportive. However, the evidence that they slow down or improve the disease itself is not yet strong enough to make definitive statements about this.
Beta-carotene and vitamin A deserve special attention: research from the past two decades has shown that high doses of vitamin A from supplements (not from food) may potentially be harmful and therefore warrant caution with very high supplement dosages.
Nutrition and lung cancer risk

People with asbestosis have an increased risk of lung cancer. Research suggests that certain dietary patterns — such as a diet high in vegetables, fruit and fibre-rich foods — may be protective in populations with lung risks. Smoking significantly increases this risk and interacts seriously with asbestos exposure. Nutrition cannot eliminate this risk, but can be part of a broader health pattern.

Many people with asbestosis use medicines for cough, shortness of breath or inflammation. Some foods and supplements can interact with certain medicines. Nutrition can also affect how well your body absorbs certain medicines. This is very individual and deserves personal guidance.
Fluid intake and sputum production
Many people with asbestosis deal with chronic cough and sputum production. Adequate fluid intake can help thin mucus and make it easier to cough up. Water, tea and moist foods (such as soup and dairy products) can be beneficial in this regard, although this varies greatly from person to person.
Some people find that certain foods worsen sputum production; this is very individual and worth paying attention to and possibly discussing with your healthcare provider.
Weight and energy requirements
Chronic lung disease can be accompanied by weight loss and increased energy requirements (calories). A proper nutrition composition — with adequate protein, healthy fats and carbohydrates — can help keep your weight stable. This is especially important because being underweight can further strain lung function.
Conversely, some people with lower activity levels may gain too much weight. A dietitian can help determine the right weight for you.
Nutrition and mental health

Recent research (2025) points to elevated depression and anxiety symptoms in patients with asbestos-related diseases.
