# Alternative treatment approaches for metastatic colorectal cancer
Traditional Chinese medicine: decoctions (Sini, Xian-Lian-Jie-Du, Pien-Tze-Huang)
Recent research shows that some traditional Chinese herbal preparations demonstrate effects against metastatic colorectal cancer in laboratory studies, particularly against liver metastases. The examined remedies include Sini decoction, Xian-Lian-Jie-Du decoction, and Pien-Tze-Huang.
In cell studies and animal tests, these preparations appear to block certain mechanisms that help tumor cells metastasize. They worked, among other ways, by suppressing certain signaling pathways and by slightly altering the animal's immune system. However, all data come from laboratory and animal research.
**There is no clinical evidence in humans.** None of these remedies has been tested in randomized clinical trials in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. It is unknown whether the effect occurs in a living body, what the effective dose would be, and how safe it is alongside chemotherapy or other standard treatment.
