# Nutrition for mesothelioma
Malnutrition and loss of muscle mass are common problems in mesothelioma, particularly as a result of the disease itself, treatments such as chemotherapy, and symptoms such as loss of appetite. Although there is no specific 'mesothelioma diet', certain dietary patterns can help support body composition and energy levels. Research into nutrition in mesothelioma is limited in scope, but is increasingly focusing on the role of gut flora, inflammation markers and energy balance.
Protein-rich nutrition

Protein-rich nutrition means consuming adequate protein distributed throughout the day — from sources such as fish, meat, eggs, dairy products, legumes and nuts. This is especially important in mesothelioma because the disease itself, chemotherapy and radiotherapy lead to loss of muscle mass and weakness.
Research into cancer in general shows that adequate protein intake helps maintain muscle tissue and support recovery after treatment. In patients with mesothelioma, increased protein requirements are recognised, especially in phases with more active disease progression or during more intensive therapies. Nutrition to support gut microbiota

This involves incorporating foods that favourably influence the composition of gut bacteria — such as fermented products (yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut), fibre-containing vegetables, fruit and legumes. This is also known as 'prebiotic' eating.
Recent research suggests that the relationship between diet, gut microbiota and immune response may be important for how well cancer patients respond to immunotherapy. An article from 2025 emphasises this 'microbiota-diet-immunity axis' in cancer care. For mesothelioma, whose modern treatment increasingly relies on immunotherapy (PD-1/PD-L1 and CTLA-4 inhibitors), this is principally relevant — but direct evidence for mesothelioma specifically is still lacking.
Risks are minimal, but patients undergoing chemotherapy-related diarrhoea or other gastrointestinal disorders should be cautious about sudden additions of large amounts of fibre.
