# Alternative Treatment Methods for Mesothelioma
Acupuncture
With mesothelioma, especially in advanced stages, patients can struggle with severe breathing difficulties and pain. Acupuncture is sometimes considered to relieve symptoms such as shortness of breath and pain complaints.
A randomized study from 2016 compared acupuncture, morphine, and a combination of both in patients with mesothelioma and advanced lung cancer. The findings showed that both acupuncture and morphine alone could provide some relief from breathing difficulties, but the combination of both was most effective for symptom relief. This suggests that acupuncture can play a supporting role alongside regular pain management.
Acupuncture is not intended as a replacement for standard treatment, but can be considered as a supplement to symptom management.

Herbal Extracts and Plant-Based Substances
Laboratory research has been conducted on various herbal preparations against mesothelioma cells. Studies have examined, for example, stilbenes from *Polygonum multiflorum* (bergamot roots) and deoxypodophyllotoxin (a plant-derived substance). In cell cultures and animal models, these substances showed theoretical effectiveness by triggering cell toxicity or cell death mechanisms in mesothelioma cells.
However: this research takes place under laboratory conditions, not in human bodies. There are no clinical studies in mesothelioma patients demonstrating that these extracts are effective, safe, or work better than regular treatment. A hospital report described one patient who, according to the authors, noticed improvements after a Korean herbal remedy, but this cannot be considered evidence of effectiveness.

Integrative Multidisciplinary Approach
Integrative oncology combines conventional treatment (chemotherapy, surgery, radiation) with supportive measures such as nutrition, physical activity, stress management, mindfulness, and sometimes carefully selected herbs or nutritional supplements.
Published case reports suggest that patients with cancer types (possibly including mesothelioma) who received a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach with attention to lifestyle and psychological support reported better quality of life and in some cases longer progression-free survival. However, this is based on limited case reports, not large clinical trials.
Integrative care can offer benefits for overall well-being and symptom management, but should always be done in consultation with your treatment team. It never replaces standard treatment.

Immunotherapy (Checkpoint Inhibitors)
Immunotherapy, particularly checkpoint inhibitors (medications that help the immune system recognize and attack cancer), has become an important research area for mesothelioma in recent years. Studies are investigating whether these agents alone or in combination with chemotherapy can improve survival chances.
This is an active research field with progress, but not yet standard for all patients. Immunotherapy is currently mostly studied in clinical trials or in specific patient groups. Whether and when this is relevant for you should be discussed with your treatment team.

Nutrition and dietary supplements
Some patients try specific diets (for example Mediterranean, antioxidant-rich nutrition) or supplements (vitamins, minerals, antioxidants) to support their immune system during cancer treatment.
While good nutrition policy can promote general health and may alleviate some treatment side effects, no specific nutrients have been shown to cure or significantly slow mesothelioma itself. Nutrition can be helpful for strength, wound healing after surgery, and overall quality of life. Discuss this with a dietitian who has experience with cancer.

Traditional Chinese Medicine and Herbal Blends
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), including herbal preparations, is sometimes sought as an alternative or supplement by cancer patients. Some publications have described individual cases where patients with mesothelioma or other types of cancer received herbal treatments and, according to the reporters, showed improvements.
However, these reports are anecdotal (case-by-case) and cannot demonstrate that the herbal remedies were truly the cause of improvement. There are no large, well-controlled clinical trials demonstrating TCM preparations as effective monotherapy (treatment alone) for mesothelioma. When taken simultaneously with chemotherapy or immunotherapy, some herbs may potentially cause interactions.

Unrecognized "cancer cures" and alternative clinics
Via the internet, social media or advertisements, cancer patients are sometimes attracted to unusual clinics or treatments outside the regular hospital network, with promises of "cure" or "alternative" therapies without cancer chemicals.
This is **not recommended** because:
- There is no evidence that these approaches can cure or control mesothelioma.
- Delay of recognized, proven treatment can allow the disease to progress further.
- Some of these treatments can be harmful (poisoning, malnutrition, infections).
- Financial exploitation of desperate patients is common.
If you are considering an alternative treatment, always discuss this first with your oncology team.
