# Nutrition and asbestos
With asbestosis – lung damage from inhaled asbestos fibers – nutrition is not a treatment for the disease itself, but it can play a role in supporting the lungs and overall wellbeing. Research into specific diets for asbestosis is limited. What is described below is based on what is known about lung diseases in general and some evidence from research into oxidative stress and inflammation, which play a role in asbestosis.
Antioxidant-rich nutrition

This pattern includes many vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds rich in substances such as vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium and various plant-based protective compounds. The idea is that asbestos exposure in the lungs causes oxidative stress – a form of internal 'rust' that damages cells – and that antioxidants can help combat this.
Research has shown that asbestos exposure indeed triggers oxidative stress in lung tissue. Antioxidants could theoretically be protective, but direct evidence that a particular eating pattern improves lung function in asbestosis is still lacking. However, antioxidants in food are well-studied for lung function in general.
One risk: some studies suggest that certain antioxidant supplements (such as beta-carotene in high doses) may be harmful in smokers and former smokers. This topic requires discussion with your healthcare provider.
Mediterranean dietary pattern

This pattern is characterized by olive oil, fish, vegetables, whole grains and limited meat and dairy consumption. It is one of the most studied eating patterns for lung function and inflammation markers.
For asbestosis specifically, direct research is rare, but studies on chronic lung diseases show that this pattern can be beneficial for lung function and inflammation values. Because asbestosis is accompanied by chronic inflammation in the lungs, this pattern may be relevant.
The pattern naturally contains many antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances, for example through the olive oil and the diversity of plant-based foods.
Protein-rich nutrition

Adequate protein intake is important for maintaining muscle tissue and immune system function. With asbestosis, especially in later stages where lung function declines and people become less active, protein loss can occur.
Research specifically on protein needs in asbestosis is lacking, but in other chronic lung diseases (such as COPD) it has been shown that appropriate protein intake can help prevent muscle loss. Protein sources include fish, meat, eggs, legumes, dairy products and nuts.
Anti-inflammatory eating pattern

This pattern is closely aligned with the Mediterranean pattern, but particularly emphasizes foods known to be anti-inflammatory: fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, herring because of omega-3 fatty acids), turmeric, ginger, broccoli, berries and certain nuts.
Because asbestosis causes chronic inflammation in lung tissue, and research has shown that exposure to asbestos fibers triggers certain inflammation markers (for example certain chemokines in the blood), it makes sense that food that dampens inflammation could be relevant. However, direct evidence that this reduces lung damage in asbestosis is not yet available.
Food high in salt and ultra-processed products

Food high in salt and ultra-processed products (with lots of added sugar, trans-fats and preservatives) can increase inflammation values and is associated with worsening lung function. This is certainly true for people with existing chronic lung conditions.
With asbestosis, where the lungs are already damaged and healing is not possible, this type of diet can accelerate symptom progression and further harm overall wellbeing.
Smoking and alcohol

These are not dietary patterns, but they play a crucial role in asbestosis. Smoking worsens lung damage significantly: those exposed to asbestos fibres who also smoke face a much higher risk of lung cancer and acceleration of asbestosis symptoms. Large amounts of alcohol can further undermine immunity and lung function.
Many studies have shown that the combination of asbestos exposure and smoking multiplies the harmful effects.
