# Alternative Treatments for Alzheimer

Acupuncture

Various forms of acupuncture are traditionally used for memory and concentration problems. Recent research is investigating, among other things, "gold needle acupuncture" with emphasis on mental regulation for mild cognitive impairment (the earliest form of memory decline).

Dietary Supplements: Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids (especially from fish or as a supplement) have been extensively studied for various heart and brain disorders. For Alzheimer specifically, the picture is mixed.

Large review studies from recent years show that omega-3 supplements are effective for certain heart rhythm disturbances. Omega-3 supplements are generally safe, but in high doses can increase bleeding risk and interfere with certain medicines; discussion with your doctor is important.

Coptisine and VEGFR3 Activation

Coptisine, an alkaloid from certain herbs (especially from the yellow coptis plant Coptis), is associated in recent laboratory studies with activation of VEGFR3, a receptor involved in the drainage of fluids in and around the brain (the lymphatic system).

This is very early research. In animal models and cell cultures, coptisine has been shown to help restore the brain's drainage system, which may limit accumulation of Alzheimer-related proteins. Whether this is also effective in living humans, and whether orally ingested coptisine reaches the brain in sufficient concentration at all, has not yet been demonstrated. This is not part of current treatment standards.

Physical Activity and Metabolic Adaptations

Regular physical exercise, especially moderate-intensity aerobic activity, is considered one of the most effective non-medication interventions for brain function and slowing cognitive decline.

Extensive research shows that regular physical activity increases the activation of AMPK (a protein that regulates metabolic health) and thus reduces inflammatory processes and insulin resistance in the body — factors that play a role in Alzheimer's. Additionally, physical exercise directly improves blood flow to the brain and stimulates the formation of new nerve cells. This is one of the few interventions with consistent supporting evidence. The recommendation is usually regular movement adapted to physical abilities; a doctor or physiotherapist can provide guidance.

Digital biomarker screening (P-tau217)

New, affordable tests based on plasma proteins (especially phosphorylated tau217, or P-tau217) make screening for Alzheimer's pathology more accessible, without brain scans or cerebrospinal fluid examinations.

These are diagnostic tools, not treatments themselves. However, they can enable early detection of Alzheimer's pathology, which could potentially facilitate the initiation of early interventions. Nutritional interventions and acetylcholinesterase inhibitors from plant-based sources

In research, extracts from certain plants (including Goji berries / *Lycium barbarum*) are being screened for substances that inhibit acetylcholinesterase — a mechanism of action similar to some pharmaceutical Alzheimer's medications.

Laboratory investigations have demonstrated that certain plant substances can indeed inhibit acetylcholinesterase. Whether regular intake of these plant extracts in practice has the same effectiveness as tested medications, and whether it is safe for long-term use, has not been established.
