The spleen is an organ located under the left rib cage in the abdomen, about the size of a fist. The organ filters blood, removes old or damaged red blood cells, and plays a role in defending against infections. In certain blood or liver diseases, the spleen can enlarge, which is why it may also break down healthy blood cells faster.
