Pulmonary fibrosis is a condition in which lung tissue gradually hardens and scars. Healthy, elastic lung tissue is replaced by stiff connective tissue, making it harder for the lungs to expand and for oxygen to move from the lungs into the blood. The name comes from 'fibrosis,' which refers to the formation of connective tissue. Pulmonary fibrosis can occur on its own or as a result of another disease, such as scleroderma. The word appears on this site because pulmonary fibrosis is usually not curable and lung function gradually declines.
