Immune function describes how well the immune system is able to recognize and fight invaders such as bacteria and viruses. Doctors can measure immune function through blood tests, for example by looking at the number and function of white blood cells. In some incurable diseases, or because of certain treatments such as chemotherapy, immune function can decrease, making a person more susceptible to infections. This word therefore appears regularly when discussing risks and the course of a disease.
